I was recently talking to a friend about things, and it was suggested that I try writing or blogging – what my friend didn’t know is that I did some thing like this a few years ago, and I sent them the link to this blog. That prompted me to re-read earlier posts and recall what I had posted previously.
When I wrote my earlier posts, I took advantage of the fact that I had a 25 minute train ride each morning, which gave me ample opportunity to thrash out some words to go into the blog, mainly about my surprising weight loss and my nascent exercise journey. Suffice to say that things have gone off the rails since then, and I am now back to the weight I was when I started at Wessex Water and that’s not a good thing.
I’ve had a number of health issues over the last year or so, and it has pushed me further and further towards mild depression. I don’t think I’ve consciously gone over the edge yet, but I have tip-toed to the edge and looked over.
My latest health mishap, as a result of a recent fall, really got to me – having damaged my back once again, it was almost impossible for me to get out of bed without sharp pain across the middle of my back. This is attributable to one thing and one thing only – my health.
I guess I’ve become complacent with my health – not really paying much attention to what I’m eating or what exercise I’m doing. I’ve also fallen into the trap of working all hours that I can, or at least being available all hours. For an operation that has UK hours as well as Malaysian hours, this isn’t healthy.
So – I’ve taken a couple of steps, the first of which is to block out evenings every other day where meetings can’t be booked and when I won’t attend any meetings that are attempted to be booked with me. I have my manager’s blessing for this, and I want to try and use the time to un-wind and hopefully exercise.
The next step is a diet adjustment – not a change, but a conscious decision to try and alter slightly what I’m eating so that I aim for more healthy choices.
Finally I’m going to start doing sit-ups again – it’s something I used to enjoy, and I got a lot of satisfaction from previously. The slight wrinkle with this is that the house only has hard floors (no carpet), so I will invest in a sit-up bench to help motivate me.
Things will improve – things have to improve. But for things to improve, my mindset needs to change and I need to try and put my health at the forefront of my mind.
